Chateau Malescot St.Exupery 2013
Chateau Malescot St. Exupery has a long history in the Bordeaux wine region. The roots of Malescot St. Exupery can be traced all the way back to 1616 when the Margaux estate was owned by the Escousses family. The Escousses were best known as notaries for the King.
The 23.5 hectare vineyard of Chateau Malescot St. Exupery is planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The terroir is gravel, chalk and clay soils with iron deposits on gentle, slopes.
The vines are 35 years of age. The vineyards are planted to a vine density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The chateau is located in the small, village of Margaux, right on the D2 highway, just a stone’s throw from Rauzan Segla. Portions of the vineyard abut the vines of Chateau Margaux.
Chateau Malescot St. Exupery can be enjoyed on the young side with decanting, due to the lush quality and character of the wine. Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 2-3 hours, give or take. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment.
“This small estate (only 130,000 bottles were produced in 2011) has been on a qualitative tear for a number of years. A fragrant perfume of spring flowers, black raspberries, blueberries and cassis is followed by a wine with medium-bodied, juicy flavors, sweet tannin and a broad, generous mouthfeel. A terrific 2011, it should be at its peak in 2-4 years, and last for 15 or more. Bravo! 2016 – 2031.
